India is no stranger to luxury.
But its manifestations have only begun to rise recently.

I still
remember 2009 and the huge number of trips I made to the newly opened DLF
Emporio mall that year, because all international brands were opening their
stores one by one at this New Delhi mecca of pure luxury.
From
Cartier to Dior, international brands had finally found a location apt for
their sparkling stores in India. And suddenly, all these brands and the Indian
luxury industry were in news.
Not that
Indian luxury brands didn’t exist before this. They did. After all, who else
donned the celebrity and rich brides of India before this era. It’s just that
Indian luxury brands were maybe only fixed on the pages of luxury magazines in India. After this time, they became
mainstream.
Today
everybody knows J. J. Valaya, Suneet Varma, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Abu Jani
Sandeep Khosla, Good Earth, Hidesign, Zoya, Forest Essentials, Mirari and the
many Indian luxury brands available in the market.
Soon,
during this time, the number of luxury magazines in India also rose. From
Harper’s Bazaar to Robb Report – all started printing Indian editions. As
disposable incomes rose, so did the need for education on where to spend all
that money.
This era
was soon led by the emergence of new Indian luxury brands. And that growth is
still being seen today. With many new brands coming to the fore (and many
shutting shop too), the luxury scene in India has never been so diverse and
competitive!
New age
arrivals include Jaipur Watch Company, Postcard Hotels, Beyond Designs, SS
Homme and plenty more.
These
new Indian luxury brands are
tapping into the millennials’ love for heritage, global style and “I want it
now” attitude to offer the best products and services, at par with their global
counterparts.
As the
Indian luxury market flourishes, so do these myriad Indian luxury brands. And
the demand and need is still going up only.
